  • Description:
  • Tenders are invited for Sri Lanka Gender-Based Violence Health Sector Response: Estimating the Cost for Delivering Services Gender-based violence (GBV) is a barrier to fostering inclusive and resilient societies, and most often perpetrated against women and girls. In Sri Lanka, the most recent data shows that one in five ever-partnered women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime (Sri Lanka Department of Census and Statistics 2019). There is a clear need to make services available, accessible and trustable for all survivors. A qualitative study on barriers to access healthcare professionals in Sri Lanka found that women-s lack of knowledge and perceptions about the role of healthcare professionals and lack of confidence in them, fear of repercussions, personal attitudes towards domestic violence and loyalty towards perpetrators were among the reasons that prevented them from seeking support (Silva et al 2022). Providing essential health services and making them accessible is critical to meet the needs of GBV survivors, and the World Bank-financed health projects provide a promising avenue to strengthen service delivery. The Ministry of Health in Sri Lanka recognizes that all levels of hospitals and field health care services have an important role to play in providing safe and confidential mechanisms for survivors to report and receive treatment and to be referred to the services of their choice as outlined in the National Guideline for First Contact Point Health Care Providers. In Sri Lanka 84 Mithuru Piyasa/Natpu Nilayam, one-stop centers located in public hospitals across the country, provide first-line support and referrals to survivors seeking help with each center equipped with a safe space where women can walk-in and at least one Medical Officer and one Nurse Officer managing the center.
